Wellness is practising healthy daily habits to attain better physical and mental health outcomes so that instead of just surviving, you're thriving. The significance of wellness must be considered; hence, it is directly connected to the general health of humans.
Wellness has been stated to have four (4) dimensions: physical wellness, spiritual wellness, emotional wellness, and social wellness. However, this article will highlight the concept of wellness and sports, particularly the thin line between both.
WELLNESS AND SPORTS: THE THIN LINE
Wellness is a broader term that encapsulates a balance between all types of health, including physical health. We want to be fit, but more so, we want to be well-rounded in our overall approach to health, and that’s where wellness enters the discussion.
Today, wellness is considered multi-dimensional. Physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, social, and environmental health are all main focuses of the term. But even things like proper nutrition and getting enough sleep can contribute to reducing your stress levels and achieving optimal health.
It is important that we do not mistake sports for fitness. While fitness is a broader focus on health that includes all the aspects of exercise—both aerobic and anaerobic exercises, strength training, nutrition, and other elements—sports, on the other hand, are more focused on competition. They involve playing a certain game or using specific skills to win against opponents.
So, while sports are great ways to stay physically fit, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to be fit to play sports. You could enjoy running around with friends in a recreational basketball game without worrying about reaching peak physical condition. On the other hand, if your goal is to become an athlete, then physical fitness will be essential for success.
So, it is important to know that while you might be involving yourself in a sporting activity, you might be missing out on wellness if you do not consider the important steps to achieving good health. As a sports enthusiast, your wellness is also as important and beyond running around the field or kicking pads.
